  • Why Jackson Miss. doesn’t have water: they gave too much of it away for free.
  • Why the prohibition on consuming raw milk from your own cow really matters.
  • The latest fertility numbers. It takes 2.1 births per woman of child bearing age to replace a country’s population. Most developed countries are well below that.
  • The downside of capping the price of insulin: it will encourage its use over newer, better, and more expensive alternative treatments. ”That will mean more disease, more disability, and more death from diabetes.”

  • ADA lawsuit abuse: A wheelchair bound disabled man filed more than 800 lawsuits alleging violations of disability access laws, including mom-and-pop shops in Salinas, Ca.
  • Lab rats have rights under US law. So do monkeys, fish and finches. Octopuses, however, have no rights. (NYT: gated)
  • NYC has banned the sale of whipped cream canisters to people under age 21. Teens can use them to get high on nitrous oxide.

  • What Noble Laureate gene editors don’t seem to want to talk about: can they change the evolution of the human race?
  • Eye hospital travels from place to place – inside an airplane.
  • How could Pickleball (a wimpy sport in my view) be sending so many people to the ER?
  • Your pharmacist can now prescribe Paxlovid. But does Paxlovid work if you have already been vaccinated? and How did the FDA get the power to decide who can prescribe?
  • Monkeypox: Trump secured the right to 13 million vaccine doses and ordered 1.4 million for emergency use in 2020. So why are all those doses being stockpiled in Washington?

  • Public-health communication around monkeypox has been an orgy of euphemism and wokespeak, misleading and baffling if you don’t understand what isn’t being said.
  • Kids going crazy: “Between 2016 and 2020, there were significant increases in children’s diagnosed anxiety and depression.”
  • Financial therapy integrates financial and emotional wellness. But is it health care?
  • Birx:  pharmaceutical giants Pfizer and Moderna are to blame for thousands of deaths because their refusal to pursue a “compassionate use authorization” for the COVID-19 vaccines led to a delay which directly impacted nursing home residents.

For many years, our health care blog was the only free enterprise health policy blog on the internet. Then, when the NCPA closed its doors, the health blog stopped as well.

During this five-year hiatus no one else has come forward to claim the space. So, my colleagues and I have decided to restart the blog in connection with the Goodman Institute. We invite you and others to use this forum to share your views.
