Wednesday Links

JAMA: “Evidence is insufficient for the use of cannabis or cannabinoids for most medical conditions.”

No, Mississippi’s educational gains are not a hoax. (Also good on why the left dismisses education reform.)

Studying social sciences and humanities makes students more left-leaning, whereas studying economics and business makes them more right-leaning. (The difference is large.)

For profit cities, (Financial Times)

Obamacare sticker shock: next year’s out-of-pocket for an individual will be $10,600.  (NYT)

Thanks for postimg the Times article on new ACA plans. Last year I analyzed ACA plans for my son. If he had a heart attack and a $50,000 hospital bill, he would owe about $17,000 after dedcutibles and coinsurance, and of course his premiums would continue.

It is understable that he and many other healthy persons are saying “Why bother?”

For that hypothetical heart attack, people on Medicaid would pay nothing. I am on Medicare Advantage and I had a real heart attack, paid about $350 total.

For a healthy younger person, the ACA plans sure look like a bad deal. If such a person goes without insurance, they will probably be just fine. I met an Iowa farmer several years ago who went without insurance for 40 years until he turned age 65. Never had a large medical bill either. Made me think about it!

For many years, our health care blog was the only free enterprise health policy blog on the internet. Then, when the NCPA closed its doors, the health blog stopped as well.

During this five-year hiatus no one else has come forward to claim the space. So, my colleagues and I have decided to restart the blog in connection with the Goodman Institute. We invite you and others to use this forum to share your views.
