The generic share of total prescriptions dispensed in the US increased from 14% when the Hatch-Waxman legislation was passed in 1984 to 42% by 2000 and 92% today.

    The utter dominance of generic drugs is probably why drug makers have turned to orphan drugs, biologics and specialty drugs. Specialty drugs are less than 2% of drugs prescribed but account for more than half of all drug spending.
