Monday Links

Posted on May 29, 2023May 29, 2023 by John C. Goodman

Roughly half of states are waiving current food stamp work requirements. Of 800 counties nationwide where work is waived, only 20 have unemployment rates above the 10% threshold prescribed by the waiver process.

Michael Tanner:  work requirements can be cumbersome and costly to enforce; there is also limited evidence that they increase employment or save much money.

Federal housing subsides are twice as large as cash welfare; and they come with no time limits and no work requirements.

Mile long trains can keep EMTs away from patients who need help.

The mile-long trains also force children to climb through the car couplings in order to get to school. This is a big problem in some of the older industrial towns that are still a rail hub.

One city wrote tickets of $150 each to the train company every time a road was blocked. After the tickets accumulated to several thousand dollars, the company tried to negotiate a lesser payoff.

The passivity of our esteemed Dept of Transportation towards rail giants like Norfolk Southern is disgraceful. See the article in Pro Publica…

The problem with trains is not just the EMTs. School children sometimes have to climb between the stalled train cars to get to school. (see Pro Publica artice, I cannot link to it here.) This is a big issue in the older towns that are still rail hubs.

The passivity of our vaunted Dept of Transportation before companies like Norfolk Southern is disgraceful.

For many years, our health care blog was the only free enterprise health policy blog on the internet. Then, when the NCPA closed its doors, the health blog stopped as well.

During this five-year hiatus no one else has come forward to claim the space. So, my colleagues and I have decided to restart the blog in connection with the Goodman Institute. We invite you and others to use this forum to share your views.
