The Left Finally Discovers What We Discovered Years Ago: Obamacare is Lousy if You Happen to Get Sick

Posted on April 11, 2024 by John C. Goodman

This is from a report by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities:

  • In a 2023 Commonwealth Fund survey, 37 percent of respondents enrolled in the marketplace or individual market reported that they or a family member delayed or skipped needed health care in the past 12 months because of cost.
  • Seventy percent of respondents reported that they spent at least 10 percent — and 23 percent said they spent at least a quarter — of their monthly household budget on health care.
  • In a recent KFF survey, 23 percent and 18 percent of Black and Hispanic enrollees in private insurance, respectively, reported having problems paying a medical bill, compared to 15 percent of white enrollees

However, the report contains:

  • No understanding of why there is a race to the bottom in the exchanges
  • No solutions other than spending more money and creating  more perverse incentives.
  • No awareness of a very similarly organized program which is incomparably better (Medicare Advantage).

Obamacare isn’t any better if you’re healthy.

For many years, our health care blog was the only free enterprise health policy blog on the internet. Then, when the NCPA closed its doors, the health blog stopped as well.

During this five-year hiatus no one else has come forward to claim the space. So, my colleagues and I have decided to restart the blog in connection with the Goodman Institute. We invite you and others to use this forum to share your views.
