Tuesday Links

Posted on June 20, 2023June 19, 2023 by John C. Goodman

Every generation thinks people were nicer in the past. But it’s not true.

Evidence that colonoscopies aren’t worth it.

Claim: Frenemies can be hazardous to your health. (NYT)

Claim: Doctors are suffering from “moral injury.” (NYT)

Biden claim: “real income for the bottom half of earners is up by 3.4% since I took office.” Reality: real income for the bottom 25% has fallen 2.3%, while the second income quartile has fallen 3.9%.

About the link “Every Generation Thinks People Were Nicer in the Past”.

[From the linked article]. “the biased memory effect. When people think of positive and negative events from the past, they’re more likely to forget the negative ones or misremember them in a positive light”

I agree there is a biased memory effect but I think it’s a bit more complicated. I think many people, probably most but certainly not all, remember childhood as carefree, good times surrounded by caring parents, kindly relatives, and most other adults were friendly toward children. I think that childhood experience for most of us is imprinted in our memories and colors our remembrance of the past.

btw, I grew up quite poor in America, and as a child wore hand me down clothes after my older cousins wore them. I still have pleasant memories of my childhood. My spouse grew up poor on a Sicilian farm and has similar memories. As she put it, “We were all poor. No one felt bad about it”.

For many years, our health care blog was the only free enterprise health policy blog on the internet. Then, when the NCPA closed its doors, the health blog stopped as well.

During this five-year hiatus no one else has come forward to claim the space. So, my colleagues and I have decided to restart the blog in connection with the Goodman Institute. We invite you and others to use this forum to share your views.
